The FUT procedure involves the precise dissection of the donor strip into individual grafts. This must be performed with extreme care under microscopes to avoid disturbing the components of the follicle that provide strength and vitality. The resulting grafts contain "follicular units", each containing 1, 2, or 3 hairs. By using only individual follicular units, the transplant procedure can simulate the way hair grows in nature. Transplanting any grouping larger than the naturally occurring follicular unit could potentially result in an unattractive pluggy or tufted look and so is avoided completely.

As natural hair growth is nonlinear and irregular, the intact follicular units are placed closely together on the scalp in an irregular pattern to simulate a natural hair growth pattern. The actual placement of the follicular units will be customized to accommodate the client's personal goals and unique needs. They can be precisely inserted into areas of hair loss in such a manner that the outcome is incredibly natural looking.  This highly specialized process ensures the maximal survival and growth of the transplanted hair. Dr. Barr also varies the angle and direction of the tiny graft incisions to a high degree so that the transplanted hairs grow out at natural angles and directions.
